Samhuinn Parade in Edinburgh 2010

The nights grow in as we move back our clocks and the new meets the old as we celebrate All Hallow’s Eve. The modern Halloween echoes the old Celtic Samhain or Samhuinn and the combination of traditions brings about a whole new way to mark the onset of winter. On our way back into the dark half of the year we can carry the light and warmth of the summer in the hope that we will be ready to welcome the return of the bright half of the year six months from now. So why not take up a flaming torch and covered in body paint parade through the streets of Edinburgh to enact the drama of the seasons?

Even though we are no longer tied to the natural cycles we can still see the value of allowing our natural environment a chance to form our inner and outer worlds. We still have different places to visit and different foods to eat depending on the seasons. The Beltane Fire Society has taken the revival of the old ways to new heights. They are the seed that has brought the fire parade and the staged Samhuinn celebration to Edinburgh. The performers give their time and energy for free. I hope that they felt well rewarded by the appreciative crowds. The whole event is a wonderful spectacle of light and of dark, of bright colours and of stunning costumes. Without a doubt this is great celebration for all to enjoy. The Beltane Fire Society host several such events throughout the year. If you can make it to Edinburgh when they are holding an event then make sure that you are there.
